HISTORY

In 1960, a meeting held at the Selskar home of Dr. A.T. Ryan made the momentous decision to form a Golf Club in Wexford town. Present that night with Dr. Ryan were Fr. M. Doyle, Dr. R. Stokes, and Messrs S. Scallan, M. Murphy. T. Keatley, G. Hurley, P. Merlehan, and F.X. Butler.

At that time a 52-acre farm at Mulgannon, with its commanding views of Wexford town and harbour was for sale, and following a satisfactory survey by Paddy Merlehan, the District Officer of the Land Reclamation Scheme, an offer was made, accepted and eventually accepted in March 1961. The fledgling club now had a home. At this stage Hamilton Stutt of John B. Stutt Ltd. was called in. This was a firm with wide experience of golf course construction at such famous places as Carnoustie, Troon, and St. Andrews and also at Waterford Golf Club.

The original 9-hole layout, although altered several times had a total of 2755 yards with the 1st hole being a massive par 5 of 510 yards. While the course was being constructed golf was introduced to the people of Wexford through pitch and putt, played on temporary greens. At first there was a 9-hole course, but so enthusiastic was the response, that this was soon extended to an18 hole course.

In 1966, having met and exceeded all requirements, Wexford Golf Club was affiliated to the Golfing Union of Ireland (G.U.I.). The first Captain in 1966 was appropriately Dr. A. T. Ryan, and the President was Rev. M. Doyle. The first Lady Captain in 1966 was Mrs. H. Mathews with first Lady President being Mrs. M. Mathews.

The original clubhouse was extended in 1969 and was further altered in 1990. The golf course was extended to a full 18 hole course under the stewardship of P.J. McMahon.

"At Whiterock, Wexford town, a golf course is being bulldozed, hacked and shovelled fro, a near wilderness of heather, gorse and criss-crossing hedges and ditches.
When it is finished it will be one of the loveliest nine-hole links in the country.
For twenty years a lot of people have been thinking about a golf course and then the Whiterock land came on the market. A committee was formed, civic-minded guarantors were found and 42 acres were bought, including a two-storey farmhouse which will become a clubhouse."
